When and How to Aerate Your Lawn

Proper maintenance of the lawn implies timely aeration. We will talk about the rules of this important for the lawn procedure, we’ll talk.

In the turf of the lawn, parts of the soiled soil are formed, which has a very negative effect on the possibility of oxygen, nutrients and water penetrating here, while accumulating carbon dioxide, which slows the growth rate of the grass cover. If you do not ventilate the soil, and this is the essence of aeration, then the appearance of the lawn will certainly suffer, there will appear bald patches, deadwood, moss, the lawn will become less resistant to cold and moisture. Competently conducted aeration reduces the compactness of the soil, improves access to oxygen, water and essential substances to the roots.

Now, when the need for aeration is clear, will tell you how to properly carry out this event to care for the lawn. To improve gas and water exchange in the soil, it is necessary to make holes and aeration and is in the process of piercing the soil.

Usually it is enough to aerate a year once a year, but if the load on the lawn is quite high, then 2-3 aeration can be needed throughout the year. Aeration can be needed in a period of severe drought to improve the flow of moisture to the roots, and during intense rains, so that the air dries out excess moisture, and decay does not begin.

Having noticed on the lawn areas, overgrown with moss, trampled down, or those where the grass has strongly turned yellow and looks sluggish, know that aeration is simply necessary. Another method to determine if it is necessary to carry out aeration is to examine the roots of the lawn. To do this, cut a small piece of turf and examine it, short roots (no more than 2-5 cm) clearly indicate the presence of compacted areas of soil, which means it is worth hurrying with Aeration.

At the time of aeration affects the type of grass used in the lawn. For example, bluegrass and fescue are designed for cool seasons and for them the soil should be ventilated better in early autumn, when these herbs are in the phase of intensive growth.

As for the lawn grass of warm seasons (eg Bermuda grass), then the aeration carried out in spring is optimal for them, or at the very beginning of summer.

Aeration is carried out with different tools, for a small lawn in the country house the most common forks will fit, which need to puncture the earth thoroughly 3-4″ deep. For lawns larger, there are more sophisticated instruments-verticator, which can have a manual drive or be equipped with an electric motor. Verticalizers can be equipped with hollow or massive knives, the latter are worse, as often they cause new areas of caked soil.

Noteworthy and such a product as “aeration sandals” – shoes, on the sole of which is a large number of hollow knives. Walking in such a “shoe” on the lawn serves the purposes of aeration, although again this is more applicable for a small lawn.

Rules for correct aeration

For a day or two before the planned aeration, the lawn should be well watered to make the land softer. You can add a detergent to the water used for watering, at the rate of 1 cap for 10 gallons of water. You can take advantage of the rainy weather and spend aeration the next day, unless of course the land is not completely wet, but only moistened to the right degree.

On a large area lawn, aeration is expedient with the help of a verticator on an electric motor. Carry out the aerator of movement, as if mowing grass, when the previous and next strips come with 1-1.5″ overlapping each other. In cases of highly compacted lawn, a repeated procedure may be necessary, in which the direction of the motion will lie at an angle of 90° to the previous one.

After 2-3 days the earth will dry out, and then, armed with rakes, it must be crushed and leveled. By ventilating the soil, it is recommended that it be watered and fertilized. If one of the causes of aeration was bald patches, a rare herb, then in these places it is necessary to sow seeds, and water them, abundantly, but carefully, so that the seeds are not blown away.

Never make aeration in hot weather – there is a high probability of completely ruining the lawn.

Proper care, and aeration in particular, will reduce the likelihood of areas with a withered cover, give the lawn resistance to disease and improve its appearance. Therefore do not neglect aeration and share your experience on this issue.
