With the onset of spring, snow comes down, and we can grieve to see the unpleasant changes that our lawn underwent during the winter cold. The most common problems are bald patches, bumps and hollows. This is usually due to improper soil preparation before sowing or sowing seeds. But even if all the preparatory work was carried out correctly, any lawn sooner or later needs rejuvenation. This procedure is necessary in order to eliminate or prevent the troubles mentioned above.
Spring lawn care steps
– Removal of decayed and withered grass;
– Cleaning of the debris accumulated over the winter;
– “combing” of the lawn (verticulation and scarification);
– Rolling of lawn, which turned more than a year;
– fertilizing with fertilizers;
– Sanding of the soil in case the soil is clayey under the lawn;
– Removal of weeds;
– Lawn aeration;
– Sowing seeds or laying the finished sod in places where there are “bald spots”.
Start the rejuvenation of the lawn with the removal of snow. As a rule, snow remains in the darkened corners, so it is often covered by an ice crust. The ice should be neatly shoveled and moved to a sunny place where it quickly melts. To avoid dents and other damage to the sod, step on the raw lawn needs to be very carefully.
The next stage will be the introduction of the first fertilizing. Usually this is a complex fertilizer enriched with nitrogen. For each square meter of a lawn it is necessary to disperse approximately 30-50 grams of fertilizer granules, and on a wet lawn the bait quickly dissolves. For additional information: nitrogen stimulates plant growth processes, so it is needed in the spring. But during the growing season, plants need more phosphorus and potassium, which increase their frost resistance.
Carding the lawn
After the snow melts, and our lawn dries, it needs to be “combed”. Or, to use correct terminology, to make a verification or scarification.
With the onset of winter, part of the grass stand dies and with time a whole layer forms from the dead remnants. The fallen leaves, the products of the life of birds and insects, and other winter garbage are also found here. After each winter, the soil becomes compacted and a solid, dry crust forms. In the root system of the lawn, carbon dioxide accumulates, the amount of which affects the acceleration or retardation of grass growth. Therefore, in the care of the lawn, the procedure for rejuvenating the turf must be included. During the loosening, we remove the layer that has fallen off and we loosen the crust. This procedure is very useful for lawn grass. As a result of its conduct, the number of insects in the grass decreases and the likelihood that the lawn will fall ill. Therefore, rejuvenation of the turf must be done constantly.
It is more convenient to loosen the soil with the help of special equipment. Now for these purposes, invented such tools as a vertex, a scarifier and a slit. It does not matter if professional tools are not at hand, you can always replace them with ordinary forks or rakes.
We start with the fact that several times we “comb” the lawn along and across, for example, with a winding rake or a verticulum. So we will collect all the accumulated rubbish from the lawn and slightly loosen the soil. After garbage collection, you can make the first fertilizing, if for some reason it did not happen earlier.
Aeration of the lawn
This is an obligatory part of the lawn care activities. It is reduced to artificially enrich the soil with oxygen and rid the sod from the carbon dioxide accumulated over the winter. As a result of aeration, organic substances are oxidized, and nitrogen is better absorbed from the fertilizers that we have introduced.
There are special devices that facilitate this task. They are called aerators. On sale you can find many models of aerators with different teeth. This is the cutting teeth, and rooting, and whole, and hollow. But, as we already mentioned, you can always replace them with ordinary pitchforks with simple or hollow teeth.
Therefore, we take forks and pierce the ground to a depth of 10-15 cm along the entire lawn. Punctures need to be done more in those places where the sod is most strongly compacted. Where less densified sod, the number of punctures can be reduced.
Destruction of weeds
Weeds appear where you least want to see them. They adapt themselves among the lawn grass, they are not frightened by the haircut. And if in time not to evacuate them from our cultural lawn, then in time it will turn into a natural lawn, where grass and flowers of unknown origin will dominate. Therefore, the complex care of the lawn includes the procedure for the destruction of unnecessary plants. Control of weeds can be carried out in two ways: mechanical and chemical.
The mechanical method of removing weeds implies ordinary weeding. It is suitable for those cases where the lawn is not heavily clogged by “outsiders”. Some people find it especially fun to remove the weed grass by hand, even if there are many weeds on the lawn. By the way, mechanical weeding is even more effective on small lawns or if the weeds are large. To facilitate the task, you can use a root extractor or a special scapula.
A chemical method for the removal of weeds means the use of special herbicides. For lawn grass, it is necessary to take selective herbicides. They are not dangerous for the lawn and only act on weeds. Before use, read the instructions carefully, as different manufacturers may have differences in application. If the lawn is badly started, it may be necessary to use chemical preparations of continuous action. Apply them carefully. The leaves of the weeds are neatly lubricated with a chemical, while carefully monitoring that the drug does not fall on the cultural vegetation.
The most effective option for controlling weeds will be mechanical and chemical measures at the same time.
After removing the weeds, we repair the green carpet. In places where there are bald spots, we sow seeds and necessarily those plants that were sown here earlier.
Or we put into pieces holes of a ready turf of a rolled lawn. At the same time, it is possible to equalize the edges of our lawn, giving it the shape we need.
Measures for the spring rejuvenation of a roll lawn are almost the same as for a conventional lawn. Unlike the seed “carpet”, the lawn can be cut already in May. But a lawn of seeds should be given at least two years, so that the turf had time to take shape and strengthen, and only after that the lawn can be cut and walked on it without harm to the grass.
