Accurately decorated edge of the lawn will not allow plants to grow, give the flowerbed a beautiful and completed appearance, and visually separate the lawn from the flowerbed.
Neighborhood of the lawn and adjacent flower beds, flower beds, beds and garden paths can turn into a real problem, if not separate them from each other. A clear border not only looks aesthetically, but also allows you to save energy. Otherwise, the lawn will quickly spread throughout the garden and you will have to systematically spend time on its weeding.
The simplest and most economical way to draw a border between a lawn and a flower garden is to dig a groove between them with a depth of 2 to 4 in, depending on the density of the root system and the type of soil. The wall adjacent to the lawn is made upright, and the edge bordering the flower garden is inclined. The groove can be excavated with an ordinary garden shovel, but it will be difficult to achieve a smooth edge, so it is better to use a special sickle-shaped shovel or hoe to trim the edges of the lawn.
The main disadvantage of this design of the edge of the lawn – the walls of the groove will have to be updated manually once a month. Therefore, for large areas of the lawn, it is reasonable to purchase a disk attachment for the trimmer.
Care for the lawn simplifies the permanent barrier – a garden border or curbing tape. It is made of a wide variety of materials – concrete, stone, brick, plastic, wood. An important role is played by the height of the curb. With a curb height of 6-8″, the lawn mower will not be able to process the edge of the lawn, and pruning along the lawn will have to be done manually. It is better, if the top of the curb is level or just below the soil level, in the extreme case – slightly raised above the surface of the lawn.
The most simple and convenient in operation – a wide flat border from the pavement tile laid along the border of the lawn, along which the wheel of a lawnmower can easily pass. For such a curb, even ground cover plants will not penetrate.
A reliable border between the lawn and the flower garden will create a curb in the form of a metal strip with a width of 4 to 12 in. Thin flexible curbs made of galvanized steel or aluminum are barely noticeable and perfectly suited for the design of curved lines. The installation of a metal border is simple. In most cases, excavation is not required – in a soft ground curb is simply hammered with a plastic hammer.
A metal hammer is better not to use, it is possible to damage the galvanized coating, and the curb will quickly rust. If the soil is solid, dig a narrow groove, place a curb in it and fix it with special pegs.
A clear line of the lawn edge can be obtained with a plastic or rubber curb. Such curbs are cheaper than metal ones, but they do their job no worse. In addition, they are durable, do not rot, do not rust.
Plastic limiters are produced in the form of perforated tapes with a width of 5-8 inches in rolls of 5-10 yards. Installing a curb from plastic is a bit more complicated than metal. Regardless of the quality of the soil, you will have to dig a groove. The border is set close to the vertical edge of the groove and fixed with special pegs. To avoid cracks, the tape is overlapped. The most difficult thing is to drown the curb to such a depth that it does not interfere with the operation of the lawnmower.
To fix the damaged edge of the lawn, you will need a “patch”. A sharp shovel from the lawn, near the edge, cut out a rectangular piece of turf. Carefully pruning it from below, separate it from the soil and move forward, to the edge of the lawn. Putting the “patch” flush with the edge, cut off the unnecessary so as to get a smooth cut. Deepening in the lawn, from which the “patch” was taken, is covered with soil to the top and sown with lawn grass. With regular watering, the grass will fill the empty space, and after two to three weeks it will be leveled with the rest of the lawn.
