Overseeding lawn grass on the lawn is recommended either in spring or early fall. The following recommendations will help to do this correctly.
When to overseed it?
Lawns often decorate not only the courtyards of private households, but also plots of land in front of administrative buildings, schools, museums. Also lawn grass helps to protect the area from the growth of weeds on it. This is especially important for a beautiful and well-kept view of parks and squares.
The question of how and when to properly overseed grass on the lawn has two answers: in the spring or early fall. Each of the ways to solve this problem has its pros and cons.
Recommendations for spring overseeding
If during the winter yellow-rusty spots formed on some places of the lawn, clearings or patches of crushed, rotten grass, it is necessary to sow plants. This process begins with the removal of all damaged grass on the site. After the liberated land you need to loosen, add fertilizers with a lot of nitrogen, and sow seeds of the same grass or a mixture of herbs that grows on the rest of the lawn. After the sowing, water the plants.
If the grass on the site is thinner and becomes loose, you need to do the following:
- Cut the damaged grass almost to the root.
- The top layer of the soil is loosened up.
- On the entire surface of the lawn, a uniform grass sowing or grass mixture should be carried out.
After seeding, you should mulch a supposes of sand and peat. The layer should not exceed 0.4″ (minimum – 0.2 in). Further, the lawn must be watered abundantly.
With the advent of the summer season, the lawn will already delight the eye with an even perfect green carpet. In summer the lawn also requires care: it needs to be fed, watered, mowed.
Fall overseed: Get ready before frosts
Early fall is the best time for restoration damaged by the summer heat of lawn areas. Sowing the lawn in fall is best at least a month before the start of frost, so that the new grass could grow to the main level, and the whole lawn could be knocked down to winter.
The technology of grass cutting on a lawn in fall practically does not differ from “spring” technology. The main thing is to be in time for frosts.
To properly repair a damaged area of the lawn, you need to do the following:
- Remove parasites from the grass using special insecticides.
- Loosen the affected area to restore the structure of the soil.
- Align the surface of the lawn (but do not trample it too much, most seeds do not like it).
- Fertilize the soil with nitrogenous fertilizers.
- Sow seeds on it.
- Abundantly water.
Attention! It must be remembered that the seeds for life need, above all, air and water. Therefore, do not be too zealous with trampling and watering the lawn. In addition, the seeds must be digested strictly on one level: planted deeper or higher than necessary, they may simply not germinate.
Regardless of the quality of the grass and its variety, any lawn is subject to the aging process. It is because of this that every season there are bald spots and red spots on it. To slow down this process will help prevent, timely sowing of new grass, and of course, the proper care for the green carpet.
