Lawn Care

When and How to Fertilize a Lawn

The development of plants, and therefore of grasses, to a large extent depends on the content of nutrients in the soil, assimilated by plants with the help of the root system. Fertilizers introduced into the soil are called upon to replenish the stock of mineral compounds necessary for plants.

This stock regularly decreases as a result of mowing grass and washing out with rain moisture into deeper layers of soil. For plants, both shortage and surplus of nutrients are harmful, therefore it is best to use special balanced fertilizers for lawns. Apply them in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

How and when to fertilize the lawn?

Before applying fertilizer, you need to mow the lawn. To ensure that the minerals can reach the roots, the fertilizer scattered over the lawn should dissolve in water.

Lawn should be fertilized at certain periods of its development. Top dressing with phosphorus fertilizers stimulates the development of the root system. It is carried out in the late autumn, every few years, since phosphorus is retained for a long time in the soil and it is impossible to allow excessive accumulation of this element. Potassium is easily washed into deeper soil layers, so potash fertilizer is introduced at least once a year. In light sandy soils this element is much less and, consequently, more potassium fertilizers are applied to such soils than to heavy soils. Fast-acting nitrogen fertilizers are used in early summer to stimulate grass growth. In the end of May – beginning of June, the lawn is fed after the verticalization.

Intensively used lawns are usually fed with full fertilizer (NPK) in the spring, and during the season several additional fertilizing with ammonium sulfate is carried out. When fertilizing lawns it is useful to use long-acting fertilizers that release the useful substances contained in them gradually, in small doses, for a long time. It must be remembered that regularly mown lawn needs regular feeding.

Mulching lawn with mown grass

A good grass can also be lawn grass. Lawn mowers with mulching function are on sale. It is especially useful to mulch lawn with mown grass in dry hot weather.

If the mown grass is many, it can be used for mulching the garden or punching. In the compost pile the grass is laid in thin layers, alternating with loose materials, for example, earth, thin branches and shoots, so that as much air as possible enters the heap. A few months later, compost is obtained – a perfect organic fertilizer that improves soil quality, acts gradually and serves as a fertilizer for the lawn.

Fertilizers with agromeliorants

The need for lawn grass in the diet is very high and it is very difficult to satisfy it using traditional fertilizers. A permanent lawn care program includes the systematic introduction of special fertilizers and agromeliorants – gypsum, lime, chalk. They maintain PH soil at the required level, and in addition, they serve as a source of calcium necessary for plants. One of the special complex mineral fertilizers of long-acting for lawns is fertilizer AVA.

Due to the high content of phosphorus and potassium, it promotes the development of the root system, increases the resistance of plants to excessive moisture, restores the activity of useful soil microorganisms and earthworms. In addition, the fertilizer provides a successful wintering of lawn grass, which is important for the conditions of the northern regions. Fertilizer operates for 2.5-3 years and does not contain toxic traces of grass. Make it when laying a lawn, and on an already used lawn – in the fall.

Instant result

To quickly restore the decorative appearance of the lawn, bring in the soil fertilizer fast action. Do it selectively, first of all, where appeared bald patches or where the grass was especially affected. Fertilizers of rapid action are intended for application in soil or for spraying.

A layer of compost about 0.4″ high scattered over the surface of the lawn significantly improves the quality of the soil. As a result, it increases its ability to retain moisture and nutrients.

The seeder allows the fertilizer to spread evenly over the entire lawn area. It is only necessary to make sure that the machine grasps all areas of the lawn. Wheels of the seed drill leave distinct traces on the lawn, allowing to control its work.
