Not every owner of his own lawn knows that from time to time to maintain the presentable appearance of the grass canvas, he will need a scarification. What is scarification, and how to properly carry it out on our own, we’ll talk about in the article.
When is it necessary to carry out scarification?
The older the lawn, the more time will need to be given to plants in order to keep them healthy and beautiful. Surely, you had to notice, not at your own site, but at your neighbors or in parks and squares, that lawns with experience often do not look as neat and festive as in the first months after laying. On the surface of many of them appear bald patches, all kinds of hummocks, “felt” accumulates. Such a lawn will not only not decorate the territory, but if you do not do it in time, it will be its main drawback.
Scarification will allow to update the lawn, restore its original appearance, rejuvenate and re-make it into a well-groomed lawn instead of an unevenly growing grass with bald patches.
It is important to remember that the lawn is not only what we are used to seeing on the surface of the soil. In addition to the grass stand, each lawn is also a soil layer. On the surface of the lawn, from time to time, a layer of moss, old grass and organic debris accumulate. A dense interlayer forms. It prevents the normal process of gas exchange, moistening of the soil and the intake of nutrients necessary for the growth and development of plants.
The result is a weak immunity of the grass, which visually manifests itself as fading, dullness, bald spots. If your lawn has lost its color saturation and become weaker than before, it makes sense to think about the fact that the soil layer receives less moisture, nutrients and oxygen. Yellowed lawn is a signal to urgently take measures aimed at its restoration.
What is the process of scarification: features
To completely clean the grass carpet from the crust, which prevents the normal development of the lawn, you need to make scarification and aeration. What is a scarification? If we talk about the roots of the word, then in Latin it means “scratching”. This means that using special garden tools, it will be possible to comb out the lawn, thereby freeing it from foreign objects.
Straw (it most often interferes with the normal growth and development of plants) is considered a dead material that is not able to disintegrate naturally due to the lack of the necessary activity of microorganisms. Most often straw is formed for a number of reasons, which are lower.
First, the soil may contain an insufficient number of humus and nutrients necessary for the growth and development of lawns. Secondly, fertilizers with high acid content may be misused. Thirdly, the grass can grow too intensively, as a result of which microorganisms can not process the generated waste in the amount necessary for normal plant growth.
Note that the layer of straw on the lawn, the thickness of which exceeds 0.2″ – is a sign that urgent measures must be taken to remove it. Otherwise, the plant will not be able to grow normally because of the catastrophic approach of the root system to the surface of the earth. The lawn will often ache, lose the ability to withstand mechanical stress, become dull and sparse.
How and when should scarification be performed
The optimal period for scarification is the time of intensive growth of grass, that is, the end of spring or the beginning of autumn. In the past, for example, in the early spring, straw should be left on the lawn, as it will protect the root system from drying out on too hot days.
You can begin the process of scarification with grass mowing, leveling, fertilizing the surface. As for the process itself, it is better to use special devices that can simplify it to the maximum. For example, you can use scribers, triangular or chain knives.
After the termination of the scarification procedure, the lawn will heal with a new life. The grass will become bright, saturated, dense and resistant to stress and disease. The root system will be strengthened and increased, due to deeper germination, a layer of grass stand will be able to withstand not only mechanical loads, but also the vagaries of nature.
Garden scarifier: what is it and what for?
Obviously, the scarifier is a device for scarification. If you read the reviews on the Internet, then you can note the additional names of the technology – slit or verticutter. The tool is used for the restoration of a lawn with a long service life, which as a result allows you to return it to its original form with minimal costs.
It is worth noting that the restoration procedures for the lawn have much in common with shock therapy. For a time after the scarification, the glade on the site will completely lose its appearance. It takes a few days to become beautiful and well-groomed again, during which the plants will again grow.
Visually, the scarifier has a similarity to a traditional lawnmower. The only difference between these two tools is the principle of knives. The fact is that in the scarifier they are immersed in the ground, and do not work only on the surface of the ground. If the dive is shallow, only the lawn layer “felt” can be treated, when the soil is immersed, the soil loosens.
Choosing a scarifier, you should take into account the power of the engine, because this is the most important point. More powerful are models with gasoline engines that will cope with the scarification of heavy clay soil without the risk of overload. The more lawn is launched, the more powerful the device for scarification will have to be used.
If there is no opportunity to purchase a tool with a gasoline engine, you can confine yourself to a model with an electric motor. It is better to use the machine in this case in several steps, repeatedly moving deeper in the soil to avoid overloading the motor.
The more expensive the model of the scarifier, the greater the indices of the penetration of knives. So, for example, in some models, these indicators reach 1 inch, while others barely reach 0.15″. Units from the category of professional equipment can be buried to a depth of 3″.
In the process of working, the scarifier knives can be tuned for the penetration of two types: smooth and step-wise. The construction of the unit is a steel milling cutter fixed to the shaft in the amount of 6 to 32 pieces on average.
Today, you can purchase combined models of scarifiers, with which you can also carry out aeration of lawns. In such units there are not only knives for penetration into the soil, but also a spring rake with spokes for aeration of the lawn.
