How to Build a Patio By Yourself

To a city dweller could at least occasionally on the 20th floor breathe fresh air, people came up with balconies. Owners of private houses or cottages of air are more than enough, but they still want to inhale it with all the amenities: stretching out in a rocking chair or sipping tea at an elegant table. On the ground to put furniture – it is inconvenient: you will make holes in a lawn, and legs like some hard coating. Similar problems remove the terrace to the country house. It is easy to build it, but you can use it all the year round. Let’s figure out what the terrace is and how it can be mounted on its own

How to choose the location of the terrace Having decided to acquire a summer terrace on the cottage, first determine where you will put it. Here are a couple of options: You can attach directly to the building, making it a continuation. An excellent option – a terrace that runs around the house from all sides. Less common is a terrace outside the main building, i. E. Standing separately. The choice of location depends largely on the location of the cottage with respect to the sides of the world. If the south side has access to the street, then the option of an attached terrace will be optimal. In it you can rest even in winter, warmed by the sun. If the entrance to the house is from the north, then the veranda attached on this side will be quite cool, although the summer heat is very useful. In this case, make an envelope around the building, so that you can go for a rest after the sun.

The terrace outside the building is usually built near swimming pools, waterfalls or other beautiful landscape elements to be able to admire them. And if your house is located on the shore of the reservoir, then, no doubt, the terrace should stand at the water’s edge

Materials

The cheapest terrace will cost if you build it yourself – this time, and build from the materials left from the main construction site – two. Planks, bricks, blocks, etc. – all this can be combined, creating a foundation. If the material has to be bought completely, then pay attention to the most reliable, because your extension must withstand the scorching rays and frost, the influence of ultraviolet and precipitation

Which form is better to choose?

When creating terraces, the choice of geometric shapes is unlimited. The easiest way is to make a square or rectangular construction. But if you strive for originality, then it is worth giving the shape of a polygon, with different levels. By the way, multi-level buildings are advantageous in that they provide a good flow of water during downpours. You at the installation slightly tilt each “step” from the building, and in the end your terrace will not be in the puddles.

Our DIY Guide

So that you understand how to build a terrace in the country, first determine its basic elements. Any open terrace will consist of:

  • a foundation;
  • Flooring;
  • Auxiliary structures.

Of these, only the first two are mandatory. The third varies depending on the imagination of the creator.

Base laying

Work order:

  • We mark the place for the future design. To do this, we drive into the ground along the perimeter reinforcing pins or wooden pegs and pull the twine on them. We lay in the corners of the temporary support (you can add 2 paving slabs), on which we lay side lags.
  • Approximately the terrace should be located above the ground in 30-40 cm. Using the level, level the horizontal, laying under the tiles construction waste (stone, pieces of bricks, etc.). At the same time, remember that the logs should be sloped about 2˚ from the house so that there is a good flow in the rains.
  • Align the stretched twine along the upper edge of the lag, tightly fix it to the peg. We remove the logs and begin to create the foundation. To do this, we put cement posts at the corners, the height of which should coincide with the temporary support, on which lags were previously laid.
  • Between the posts digging a trench, pour cement mortar and put sidewalk curbs in it, so that about half the height is in the ground.
  • Level the plane, wait until the concrete hardens.
  • We create the exact basis on the opposite side.
  • The remaining voids near the curb are covered with sand.

Instead of curbs, you can pour a regular tape or columnar foundation. Also, some owners internal terrace space are covered with gravel and make a water drainage system.

Installation of wooden flooring

Work order:

  • On the posts and borders we put the logs and fix them with screws.
  • We mark where we will fix the beams.
  • We lay out the bars, connecting them with lags corners.
We are laying boards. If you use an ordinary tree, it is better to buy larch, because it is ideally suited for outdoor conditions. Most often take boards 10-15 cm wide and 2-3.5 cm thick.
  • The board of the board is not back-to-back, but retaining the clearance for ventilation. This will help the terrace to avoid rotting.
  • We trim the edges of the floor with an electric jigsaw.

We paint or varnish the coating. Note that if decking is placed instead of the boards, then they begin to be laid from the wall, retreating 1 cm from the building.

Auxiliary structures

To the auxiliary structures are all that allows to make the arrangement of the terrace in the country more comfortable. It can be a roof, a railing or a fence, pergolas for flowers and even a swing. It is the additional elements that make the terraces at the cottage beautiful, unlike the similar buildings of neighbors.

Variants of the roof

The most popular of the additional elements is the roof. It gives protection from natural factors to both people and flooring. If the terrace is attached to the house, then more often the same roofing is installed as on the main building.

No less popular are polycarbonate roofs. They do not need a solid foundation. It is enough at the corners of the structure to cement the pillars from the beam or asbestos. More difficult is the “green” roof. It is erected to create an additional landscape effect, planting plants and thinking through their composition. But note that for normal growth of plantations it is necessary to pour a high level of land, make a layer of drainage, waterproofing, and this requires a strong support. Otherwise, at one point the heavy roof will collapse on the heads of its own masters. In such terraces, the four pillars are indispensable. You will have to put support on the perimeter of the structure and strengthen the crate. If the structure is used mainly in the summer, it is possible to make a removable roof. It is a fabric canopy (marquise), which is sold ready-made. The marquis extends and moves under the roof of the house manually or automatically. And if the terrace is stand-alone, it is fixed using metal racks. Fabric in canopies – acrylic, reinforced with Teflon coating. She is not afraid of rain or scorching rays.

Some owners use folding umbrellas in the design of the terrace, not bothering to install the roof. In principle, to create a shadow on a summer day, this option is more than enough, especially if you rest only occasionally

Decoration

To give the terrace design a certain zest, it’s easiest to decorate the area with floral arrangements. It can be hanging, potted plants planted along the perimeter of evergreen shrubs. If you plant a row of tuyas windiest side, then, apart from the decorative effect, they will provide protection against winds. To make the site of some closeness hang the tulle, releasing them or collecting them in bundles, depending on the mood.

Furniture is often used woven or rattan, because their structure is not afraid of weather conditions, and the exterior is light and does not clutter up the space. Each owner comes up with his own interesting ways how to decorate the terrace in the country. Therefore, in the world there are no two identical buildings.
