The garden fence, made with hand made from improvised materials or installed using ready-made elements, is an important detail in the overall landscape design of the site. It not only performs decorative functions, giving the beds a complete, well-groomed appearance, but also create a harmonious, unified landscape composition. In addition, it helps in zoning the site, dividing it into thematic zones, as well as performing a protective function, protecting delicate plants from the “excessive interest” of children and animals.
Depending on the purpose for which the garden fence will be used, a certain type of fence is selected: to simply divide the lawn and the flower garden, having designated the border of the flower bed, a low modest fence with a height of 2-3″
If the fence for the flower bed simultaneously serves as a curb for the garden path, a more stable and powerful fence with a height of at least 10 cm
A fence made of brick and stone is usually used for flower beds raised above the ground. In this case, in order to retain the soil and maintain the unchanged and stable shape of the flowerbed, the fence must be stable and durable
To prevent the growth of the flower bed and block the long roots of some plant species, a fence that is buried deep enough in the ground will be needed. For these purposes, usually use plastic tape or stone (brick) masonry, but the tree under such conditions will quickly collapse
To protect the plantations on flower beds from children and pets will require a sufficiently high, not less than 40 cm, fence. But in order to maintain the visual appeal of the flowerbed, use “transparent” fences – pickets made of wood, metal or plastic.
Most Common Design Ideas
The choice of the type of fencing directly affects the plants in the flowerbed. A fence of medium height (15-20″) will look harmoniously around the front garden or rosary. A small fence visually simply lost on the background of tall, well-proportioned roses, sprawling pions or lush dahlias. But the mixboarder or the color border as such is practically not needed, here it is possible to limit oneself to a line laid out of paving slabs, mosaics or flat stones.
The tree is a very cozy and warm natural material that will look natural on the site. It does not heat up in the sun and does not reflect the sun’s rays, so it will not burn the tender vegetation. To work with such material is simple, interesting and pleasant, it does not require special skills. A significant drawback – the fragility of the tree, which is partially compensated by treatment with special impregnations and periodic tinting. In this case, it will be appropriate to use any kind of wood – from truncated branches to lining, fences and even slabs
Wooden fencing can be very diverse: palisade or curb from the stakes (chocks) buried in the ground, a fence set – both of simple and carved slats, including – of different widths, a mosaic made of flat cross-cuts
A fence made of logs, a fence of branches, a wattle fence
A simple decorative fencing for the flower beds with their own hands is enough – edging the flower bed with wooden chocks. For this, logs of approximately the same diameter can be used, with the necessary height of the fence adding 8″ – they are buried in such a depth to the ground. Before installation, logs are cleaned of the bark and treated with an antiseptic to prevent rot.
In addition, the bottom of logs can be wrapped in ruberoid – this will reliably protect the wood from ground moisture. On the perimeter of the planned flowerbed with a depth of 8″ dig a groove, it is densely and evenly installed logs and, well rammed, covered with soil. If the tree is well protected from moisture, such a fence will last for at least ten years.
Stone (meaning brick, paving slab, natural and artificial stone) fencing can be erected with the use of dry masonry (the elements of the fence are kept due to the force of friction and gravity), and with the use of calcareous, clay and cement mortar. In addition, the stone can be combined with other materials (wood, stone). This is a very durable and reliable fence, but at the same time very costly.
A variety of shapes, configurations and sizes and colors of paving slabs allows you to use it to protect even the smallest flower beds. And thanks to its neat appearance, the paving slab harmoniously blends into the fragile floral composition.
Forged, cast or welding fences made of cast iron or iron look stylish and expensive, they have very high durability. Very often they are made individually, while the customer himself chooses the necessary section size and sketch drawing. Such fences look expensive and stylish, they have high durability indicators. The only significant drawback is the high cost. Plus – not every design logically and naturally fit forged fence. Forged gratings can also be used as a support for climbing plants.
Plastic attracts with its excellent performance: immunity to moisture and temperature changes, it is not hygroscopic and durable, perfectly retains its shape. The plastic fence is easy to install and can be easily dismantled, replaced or remanufactured. A huge plus – a large selection of sizes, shapes, sizes and colors, it is easy to choose a fence made of plastic in the style of landscape design. There are curbs that accurately simulate stone, wood or brick.
The main variants of plastic fences:
- Sectional fences – of different colors and configurations, of small height, they already have solid cast pegs along the edges. To get a fence, just pegs to drive into the ground
- Plastic border – flexible tape in a roll. With its help you can get a flower bed of any, the most bizarre shape, to fence the path bending along the flower garden. The border ribbon can be either smooth or have a textured surface: corrugated, imitating a stone or a brick.
To install a plastic fencing for flower beds with your own hands, it will take a minimum of time.
To start on the perimeter of the planned flowerbeds dig a groove (the depth depends on the purpose of the curb, to protect from the roots of the border buried deep). Measure the tape of the required length, and to ensure that the ends do not diverge – fasten them with a stapler. Place the curbstones in the groove and fill the lower part of the curb, tamped it well.
The fencing, made independently from the available materials, will make the flower bed unique and attractive. The most famous fence for a flower bed from improvised materials is a fencing for a bed of bottles: plastic or glass.
To install such a fence you need to dig a shallow (about half the height of the bottle) trench and in it tightly place the bottles. To prevent the PET bottle from losing its shape, it must first be filled with sand, earth, or small stones.
To make the fence of the flowerbed with your own hands from improvised materials, you can use unused vinyl records, almost to half “drowning” them in the ground. As an option – the discs can be replaced with porcelain plates, left from the disassembled services.
